The Best of Fine Homebuilding CD-ROM ------------------------------------ This CD-ROM uses Adobe's Acrobat Reader 5.0.5 with Search. Even if you already have Reader installed on your computer, it is strongly recommended that you re-install to ensure you have version 5.0.5 with the Search option, or run Reader 5.0.5 to from the CD (Windows only). This Read Me file contains information on Acrobat Reader and program installation instructions. The "How to Get the Most from this CD" document and the Acrobat Reader Online Guide also provides essential information to help you begin using Acrobat Reader 5.0. ============ Installation ============ ----------------------------------- Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, ME and XP ----------------------------------- This disc includes the Acrobat Reader installation program and a runtime version of Acrobat Reader for Windows. When inserted in your computer, the CD should autoplay and display the initial startup screen with instructions. If this does not happen, open the autorun.exe file and follow the instructions on the screen. If the autorun.exe file fails to load: - Run the Rp505enu.exe program in the [CD-DRIVE]:DATA\INSTALL\ directory to install Acrobat Reader onto your computer. - Open the start.pdf file to load the menus for this CD. ------------ Macintosh OS ------------ This disc functions best when running System 8.6 or higher, System 9.0.4 or higher, or Mac OS X. - Visit Adobe’s web site at www.adobe.com. - Download the free Acrobat Reader 5.0.5 (or later) with Search - Double-click on the ACROBAT READER INSTALLER icon - Click "CONTINUE" on the screen - Click on the arrow next to "easy install" and select "CUSTOM INSTALL" - Check the box next to "SEARCH" and click "INSTALL" - Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation Once you have installed Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0.5, open (or double-click) start.pdf to begin using the disc. Mac OS X users: as of this writing, Acrobat Reader must be run in Classic mode in order for the Search function to work. - Quit out of Acrobat Reader if it is running. - Double-click on your hard-drive icon, find the Acrobat Reader application inside your Applications folder, then click on it once to select it (do not launch Reader). - While the file is still selected, go into the File menu on the Menu Bar, and select Show Info. - Click on Open in the Classic environment. =========================================== Using The Best of Fine Woodworking CD-ROM =========================================== To take advantage of all the features of this CD-ROM, we strongly encourage you to familiarize yourself with the Acrobat Reader program and its search capabilities. From the Edit menu, select Preferences. Then select "Options" from the column on the left. The option "Open Cross-Document Links in same Window" should NOT be checked. FUZZY DISPLAY ------------- If you experience a fuzzy on-screen display, try Edit -> Preferences. Select "Display" from the column on the left. Check (or uncheck) the options under "Smoothing." This disc is best viewed at a minimum screen resolution of 1024x768.
